Weft Passport — Textile Provenance & Compliance Platform
A passport for a piece of cloth. Scan the QR code on a garment and see where it came from — which artisan wove it, on which loom, in which batch. Built as a working prototype for a founder launching an ethical textile business.
The Problem
Machine-made cloth is routinely sold as "handwoven," and the people who actually weave it are invisible in the supply chain. At the same time, regulation is closing in: the EU's Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition directive, the textile Digital Product Passport, and the UK's Green Claims Code all mean that brands making "handwoven" or "ethical-origin" claims will soon have to prove them — or face penalties for greenwashing.
Our client needed a way to record provenance at the source — down to the individual artisan and loom — and turn it into proof a brand could trust.
Our Solution
Built as a working prototype for a founder launching Silk and Soil — here's what exists today:
Provenance captured at source
A field verification flow records the artisan, household, loom and location behind a batch of cloth, built around a multi-tenant data model that links artisan → loom → batch → SKU.
A certification lifecycle, not just a database
Batches move through a clear lifecycle — captured in the field, submitted for review, then certified by an admin — so every claim is backed by a deliberate verification step rather than self-declaration.
A public passport, not a walled garden
A certified batch produces a public consumer provenance page at /passport/[id], reached by a QR code, that tells a shopper who made the item, on which loom, in which batch — readable by anyone, no account required.
Built on least-privilege security
Role-based access separates admins, brands and field coordinators, and the public provenance page is made safely readable by anonymous visitors through dedicated Postgres Row-Level Security policies — public where it should be, locked down everywhere else.
Built thin by design
The hard-won asset here is the client's field methodology and dataset — so the software was built standard and fast on a modern, proven stack rather than over-engineered.
